Germany will send naval ships to the Arctic in response to growing Russian military presence, informs The Telegraph, citing German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

According to him, the Bundeswehr will deploy patrol vessels to the North Atlantic and the Arctic to "show its presence."

"Maritime threats are increasing … Russia is militarising the Arctic. We are seeing an increasing activity of Russian submarines operating in that area," Pistorius said.

It is noted that the German Navy will be sent to the region this year. On the way to the Arctic, the German fleet will conduct training exercises with its allies.

Pistorius emphasized that German submarines, patrol aircraft, and frigates will be deployed to show "our commitment to that region."

At the same time, according to The Telegraph, these new patrols are part of Germany's broader goal — to play a much more significant role in defending the West against Russia in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

As a reminder, according to Defense Intelligence Representative Andrii Cherniak, the Kremlin is expanding its military presence in the Arctic. Moscow is militarizing the strategic region under the guise of so-called "scientific activities."
