Germany plans to support Ukraine with two more Patriot systems, acknowledging the need to help Ukrainians feel safer amid Russia’s massive missile attacks, according to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and update on X.

Germany is set to support Ukraine with two additional Patriot air defense systems, aiming to help Ukrainians feel safer during Russia’s large-scale missile strikes. An official decision on the transfer may be announced in the coming days.

Pistorius arrived in Washington on July 14, 2025, to discuss the matter with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The meeting is expected to take place late in the evening local time. Pistorius will spend less than 24 hours in the US, returning to Berlin early Tuesday morning.

The minister noted that a decision on the systems will likely be made within days or weeks, but the delivery of the first system could take several months.

Germany originally possessed 12 Patriot systems. Three have already been provided to Ukraine, two are stationed in Poland, and one is permanently undergoing maintenance or used for training.

In 2023, Germany delivered three Patriot batteries to Ukraine in August, September, and December, after Ukrainian crews completed training. These deliveries significantly strengthened Ukraine’s ability to counter missile and air threats.

Patriot air defense transfers

The US has agreed to allow NATO allies that possess Patriot systems to transfer them to Ukraine from their stockpiles, promising replacements from US reserves. A total of 17 Patriot systems are part of this plan.

US President Donald Trump also stated that he reached an agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on a new scheme for supplying weapons to Ukraine.
