Germany will participate in providing security guarantees to Ukraine if a peace agreement is concluded. These guarantees are currently being negotiated by a Coalition of the Willing, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

Wadephul says Germany will contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine in a speech he will deliver at the annual meeting of German ambassadors in Berlin.

However, the Minister does not specify what Germany's contribution to providing security guarantees to Kyiv might be.

Unlike a number of European countries, Berlin has so far refused to commit to deploying troops in Ukraine as part of providing security guarantees after the cessation of hostilities.

Germany's position

On September 4, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing took place in Paris. Following the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 26 countries were ready to provide security guarantees in various formats. French President Emmanuel Macron said that these countries were ready to send military contingents or support them.

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that Ukraine should receive security guarantees that would effectively be close to NATO membership.

In addition, German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil said that Germany would take responsibility for providing security guarantees, but that decisions should not be made over the heads of Ukrainians and that any negotiation process must begin with a ceasefire.
