Germany prepared to be NATO's leader against Russian aggression
Germany is prepared to assume a leadership role in NATO, as allied nations have requested for many years, according to German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius in an interview with Bloomberg.
“NATO has gained even more relevance and importance with Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine,” said Pistorius at a conference on NATO policy in Berlin.
Germany, the biggest economy and most populous country in Europe aims to safeguard the eastern border of the military alliance from Russian hostility.
“Because we can’t expect Russia to abandon its imperial fantasies in the coming years and decades, we are contributing significantly in the alliance to a credible and effective deterrence,” affirmed Pistorius.
Military spending in the EU
As a reminder, the European Union will revise its budget rules to boost military spending following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Currently, only nine EU members meet NATO's target of spending 2% of their national output on defense, with Finland, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia projected to reach this goal by 2023. Meanwhile, France, Germany, and Italy, which are the EU's largest economies, fall short of the NATO threshold.
