Germany may attempt to hold second round of chancellor elections today, media reports

Germany may attempt again today, May 6, to elect Friedrich Merz as federal chancellor. In the previous vote, he was just six votes short, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports.
According to the news agency, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have agreed with the Greens and the Left that the Bundestag will try to elect Merz as chancellor for the second time today.
Failed first round
After the collapse of the traffic light coalition in Germany, Bundestag elections were held. On February 23, it was announced that the CDU/CSU bloc, led by Merz, won the election. Following this, Merz conducted negotiations regarding coalition formation.
Yesterday, on May 5, Germany held a ceremony to bid farewell to Olaf Scholz as federal chancellor.
Today, the Bundestag failed to elect Merz as chancellor. To secure the position, he needed 316 votes, but only 310 deputies voted in favor.
As Bild reported, Berlin postponed the second round of the chancellor elections.
