Germany has postponed the second round of the chancellor election after Friedrich Merz failed to secure the required number of votes, Bild reports.

According to Bild, the Bundestag will not hold a second round of voting today. In particular, this information was confirmed by the Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Carsten Linnemann.

First round failure

After the collapse of the traffic light coalition, early elections to the Bundestag were held in Germany. On February 23, the bloc of the CDU and the Christian Social Union (CSU), led by Merz, won the parliamentary elections. After that, he held a dialogue on forming a coalition, which he eventually formed with the Social Democratic Party.

In particular, yesterday, May 5, a farewell ceremony for Olaf Scholz from the post of Chancellor was held in Germany.

Today, May 6, Merz failed in the first round of voting and did not receive the necessary majority of votes in the Bundestag to be elected Chancellor. He needed 316 votes, but the results ultimately turned out differently:

  • for - 310 votes;
  • against - 307 votes;
  • abstained - 3.

According to local media, this is the first time in the history of federal Germany that a previously appointed chancellor has failed in the Bundestag after federal elections and successful coalition negotiations.
