Germany may allocate additional funds for weapons to Ukraine – German Defense Minister
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius hopes that the German government will allocate additional funds for the supply of weapons to Ukraine, according to Spiegel.
As Pistorius noted, negotiations to increase the current budget for 2024 aid to Ukraine by €7.5 billion are “very promising” and are likely to be completed by the end of the week.
“Then we will be talking about a significant amount of hundreds of millions of euros,” the German Minister said.
Since the NATO summit in July this year, Pistorius has warned that the billions previously budgeted for military support for Ukraine have been significantly utilized or earmarked for specific purposes. For this reason, he repeatedly called for a public increase in the budget for this year.
At the same time, the German Defense Minister did not answer how much money the federal government would allocate to help Ukraine. According to Spiegel, the Defense Ministry hopes to receive less than half a billion euros.
Germany's assistance to Ukraine
Germany has provided Ukraine with the largest amount of military aid among all European countries since the beginning of the full-scale war.
In particular, Berlin has provided the Ukrainian military with Patriot air defense systems, Leopard 2 tanks, PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery systems, and other types of weapons.
The last time Germany announced a new military aid package for Ukraine was in May. At that time, it also included 500 million euros worth of weapons, including missiles for the IRIS-T.
