In September 2022, the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged. Over the past two years, German authorities have made progress in the investigation, states Federal Public Prosecutor General of Germany, Jens Rommel, confirmed the development in an interview with Spiegel.

According to Jens Rommel, authorities have identified two suspects linked to the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. However, he emphasized that much work remains to be done in the investigation.

"We have succeeded in identifying two suspects. In my view, this is a success that was not necessarily to be expected at the start," Rommel stated.

He also revealed that efforts are ongoing to uncover additional individuals involved and to determine the motives behind the attack.

The Attorney General clarified that the investigation focuses on the damage inflicted on pipelines that were intended to play a crucial role in supplying gas to Germany.

"This was a major attack on our country's energy supply that was capable of destabilizing the local economy and society - regardless of any political classification," Rommel concluded.

In August 2024, Germany issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian driver suspected of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines.

Ukraine, however, has denied any involvement in the attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines.
