Germany approves large arms sales to Türkiye
Germany has approved significant arms supplies to Türkiye. This decision was made after several years of “colder” relations between the two countries, reports Spiegel.
In recent years, Germany has significantly minimized arms sales to Türkiye due to the "cooling" of relations with Ankara for many reasons, but now there is a signal that this trend is changing.
According to the media outlet, German manufacturer MBDA has received permission to sell Türkiye 100 air defense missiles for ships, which could cost about 100 million euros, as well as SeaHake torpedoes worth 156 million euros.
In addition, various German arms companies have received the green light to:
- supplying Turkey with equipment packages to modernize its U20 submarines
- supplying engine parts for corvettes and frigates worth €1.9 million.
The estimated value of all the contracts combined may be around €336 million.
For comparison, in 2023, the sale of arms and equipment to Türkiye was approved for only €1.22 million in 17 small projects. In the first quarter, arms exports worth €23 million were approved.
This year, a new dispute broke out between Germany and Türkiye. This time it was over food.
