German President ready to schedule early election after coalition collapse
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is ready to call an early parliamentary election, but there is a condition, according to DW.
The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stated that he was ready to dissolve the German Parliament, after which an early election would be held.
"Our country needs a stable majority and a government capable of action. This will be my criterion," Steinmeier emphasized.
He noted that the collapse of the "traffic light" coalition, which includes the Social Democratic Party of Germany (the party of Chancellor Scholz), the Green Party, and the Free Democratic Party, represents a political crisis "that must be left behind."
"Now is not the time for tactics and maneuvers; it is a time for reason and responsibility," he added.
It’s important to note that, under German law, early election is only possible in two cases, with the sole viable option in this case being a parliamentary decision to deny a vote of confidence to the government.
If that occurs, Steinmeier would be able to dissolve the parliament within 21 days of the vote on confidence.
Coalition collapse
On November 6, Chancellor Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner, citing a breach of trust.
In response, the ruling coalition collapsed as the Free Democratic Party, of which Lindner is a member, decided to exit the alliance.
