German President: Early parliamentary elections in February are 'realistic'
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier believes that early elections to the Bundestag could take place in February 2025. However, this is possible if Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government fails to receive a vote of confidence, according to the German President's office.
The president met with opposition CDU leader Friedrich Merz, SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich, and leaders of the parliamentary group of the Greens, Britta Haßelmann and Katharina Dröge.
Following the meeting, the chancellery noted that Steinmeier, based on the current assessment, "considers February 23, 2025, a realistic date for holding early elections."
It is worth noting that initially, parliamentary elections in Germany were scheduled for the fall of 2025.
Breakdown of the traffic light coalition
It was previously reported that Germany's so-called traffic light coalition (consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, the Free Democratic Party, and the Greens) has broken down.
It all began when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner, a representative of the Free Democratic Party.
Additionally, on November 11, Scholz announced that he is ready to call a vote of confidence in his government before Christmas.
