Germany has called for the deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine. There is no other alternative, according to a statement by CDU MP Roderich Kiesewetter.

The CDU security policymaker believes that there is no alternative to deploying Bundeswehr soldiers in Ukraine after the war is over.

“As the strongest economic power in Europe, Germany should be ready to make a significant contribution to peace and the European security architecture,” he said.

From his point of view, Germany is obliged to get involved in Ukraine in time with well-equipped troops, and it would be negligent not to.

Kiesewetter continued that Germany's participation should take place within the framework of the EU and NATO.

“A peacekeeping force is effective and, given our limited material and human resources in Europe, realistic when the peacekeeping force can be attributed to the European and transatlantic security architecture and therefore to NATO since the nuclear shield also applies to Ukraine,” he stated.

Alignment of political forces in Germany

After the Free Democrats (FDP) left the coalition before the early elections in Germany, a minority government consisting of the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens remained in power.

The current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is the leader of the SPD, but his political force is unlikely to gain enough votes to make him head the government again in the new coalition. Recently, the media have reported that Olaf Scholz's chances of being re-elected are rapidly decreasing.

At the same time, the largest CDU/CSU bloc, which is currently in opposition, according to polls, has more electoral support than other individual parties. And if it manages to form a future coalition, CDU leader Friedrich Merz will likely become chancellor.

Merz himself does not rule out the possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. But only if such a mandate is obtained in consensus with Russia.

German peacekeepers in Ukraine: Not everyone agrees with Kiesewetter

At the same time, not all German politicians are so supportive of Ukraine on the issue of deploying peacekeepers. In particular, the head of the European Parliament's Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, on the contrary, evaded commitments to a German mission in Ukraine.

“In future peace talks, neither Russia nor the United States should decide for Europe,” she said.

In her opinion, the EU should take responsibility, and more can be said only after the end of hostilities.

In turn, the majority of Germans, namely 56%, would support the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, as evidenced by the survey. However, only 23% favor the deployment of German soldiers, while 33% do not.

In early December, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected the possibility of sending German peacekeepers to Ukraine. At least while the country is at war.

At the end of December, Scholz reiterated his position on peacekeepers, saying that talks about the possibility of deploying a European peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine in the future were premature.
