German media report on plans to supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles
The ruling coalition in Germany has prepared a secret proposal to supply Kyiv with a larger quantity of ammunition, vehicles, and weapon systems. The package may include Taurus missiles, according to Bild.
According to the DPA agency, a vote on this aid package is set to take place in the Bundestag later this week.
While the winged Taurus missiles, which Kyiv has long requested, are not explicitly mentioned in this project, it does discuss "the provision of additional long-range weapon systems and ammunition necessary for Ukraine to carry out targeted attacks on strategically important targets deep within the Russian aggressor's territory."
Taurus missiles fit this description precisely as they can reach targets over 500 kilometers away. France and the United Kingdom have already supplied Ukraine with their Scalp and Storm Shadow missiles, but they are considered less effective than Taurus.
Taurus for Ukraine
Since last year, Ukraine has been urging Germany to start deliveries of long-range Taurus missiles capable of destroying Russian targets up to 500 kilometers away.
However, Berlin has so far refused such deliveries. According to media reports, Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposes the decision. Last week, he dodged a question about possible Taurus missile deliveries but underlined that Germany would continue to support Ukraine.
Recently, the German CDU/CSU party submitted a resolution to the Bundestag calling for the provision of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but it was not supported.
