German Foreign Minister highlights importance of Biden’s decision allowing strikes on Russia
The United States has made an important decision regarding military support for Ukraine. However, this is not a change in the West's strategy, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock says.
German Foreign Minister highlights importance of Biden’s decision allowing strikes on Russia
President Joe Biden's administration has authorized Ukraine to use American-made weapons to strike at Russian territory.
“The decision from the American side, and I would like to emphasize that this is not a rethink but an intensification of what has already been delivered by other partners, is so important at this moment,” Baerbock said in Brussels before a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Germany's chief diplomat also issued a warning to Vladimir Putin's supporters and said that the EU is preparing new sanctions against Iran and is also studying the issue of supplying Chinese drones.
Baerbock has repeatedly stated that she supports the supply of German Taurus missiles to Ukraine. However, according to her, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party thinks otherwise. The Foreign Minister said that the coalition cannot agree on this issue.
Earlier, Scholz said that if the Ukrainian Defense Forces were provided with Taurus missiles, they could hit one of the targets in Moscow if used incorrectly.
Baerbock represents the Green Party in the German government. The coalition has now collapsed, and parliamentary elections are scheduled for February 2025. The CDU/CSU bloc, whose leader Friedrich Merz supports the transfer of Taurus to Ukraine, may win these elections.
