German Foreign Minister backs Ukraine's long-range weapon use
Long-range weapons play an important role. Therefore, Kyiv must have the capability to use them for self-defense, according to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in the Telegram post of Deutsche Welle.
"I have always said that it plays an important role, especially for overcoming the security belt in eastern Ukraine," the politician stated during an appearance on the ARD television channel.
Furthermore, she was asked whether Germany should supply Ukraine with additional types of weapons in the future. According to Baerbock, she has expressed her opinion on this matter, but German Chancellor Olaf Scholz holds a different view. The Foreign Minister added that the coalition cannot reach an agreement on this issue.
It is worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long been seeking permission to use Western weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory.
As Deutsche Welle reports, for this to happen, the US would need to allow the use of ATACMS missiles, and the UK would need to provide Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Theoretically, German Taurus cruise missiles could reach Moscow; however, Scholz has refused to supply Ukraine with such weapons.
