Georgian Prime Minister threatens President with prison if she remains in office
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that President Salome Zourabichvili will have to resign from office after the end of her term. He threatened her with prison in case of disobedience, Sova informs.
He said that Zourabichvili “has not even a week left” as president of Georgia, so the prime minister “recommended” that she not meet with the opposition and refrain from calling new parliamentary elections.
“Some European politicians and officials indeed say that a lot can happen before December 29 (Zourabichvili's term expiration date - ed.), but I assure you that not much will happen,” Kobakhidze said.
The head of the Georgian government threatened the president in case she did not leave office.
“Let's see where she will continue to live - behind bars or free. I think she has enough grounds not to violate the Criminal Code,” he said.
Situation in Georgia
Protests in Georgia began in late October when parliamentary elections were held. The victory went to the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party, which has been ruling the country for over a decade.
Observers recorded numerous violations and attempts to falsify the vote. The opposition in Georgia refused to recognize the elections and called for protests.
On December 14, Georgia elected a new president. For the first time, the president was elected not by citizens, but by the electoral college, where the Georgian Dream has a majority.
A former footballer with anti-Western views, Mikheil Kavelashvili, was declared the winner. He was the only candidate nominated by the Georgian Dream.
