Georgian President comes out to protesters: Promises to prevent provocations
Today, the electoral college elected a new president of Georgia, but people are protesting because of unfair parliamentary elections, reports the Echo of Caucases. The current head of state, Salome Zourabishvili, came out to the protesters and promised to prevent provocations.
According to the channel, Zourabishvili addressed the audience on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi.
“I am with you, I will not allow provocations,” she said.
Today in the Georgian parliament, the electoral college elected former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili as president. He was the only candidate nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Yesterday, Salome Zourabishvili said that she would not recognize the results of today's presidential election. She also added in her statement that she would stay in the presidential palace.
This whole situation was preceded by the parliamentary elections that took place in late October 2024. They were won by the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party, although according to opinion polls, opposition parties were expected to gain success. After that, protests began in the country. People are demanding new elections in the country.
