Gazprom to continue transit of Russian gas through Ukraine despite fighting in Kursk region
The transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system is going on routinely, according to Reuters.
According to the agency, Gazprom will continue to transport gas through Ukraine to Europe. This will happen despite reports that fighting is taking place in Russia's Kursk region, allegedly between the Ukrainian military and Russian troops.
According to the Ukrainian operator, 41.6 million cubic meters of gas are expected to be transported from Russia to Europe through Ukraine on Thursday.
Gazprom reportedly said it would send 39.4 million cubic meters of gas to Europe through Ukraine on Wednesday, down from 42.4 million cubic meters on Tuesday.
It is worth noting that every day about 42 million cubic meters of gas pass through Sudzha. The total annual transit volume is about 14 billion cubic meters.
"As of 1300 Kyiv time (1000 GMT), gas is being transported to European customers as usual, without any changes. Nominations have been confirmed and the physical flow of gas is maintained," the operator reported.
This morning, information began to spread on social media that the Ukrainian military had taken control of the Sudzha gas metering station in the Kursk region of Russia.
It is a key facility for the supply of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine and the only point through which Russian gas enters Ukraine for transportation to European markets. After all, in 2022, the GTS Operator stopped receiving gas from Russia at the physical point of connection Sokhranivka. It provided about a third of Russian gas transit to the EU.
What is happening in the Kursk region
On the morning of Tuesday, August 6, a number of media outlets reported that the Sudzha district of Kursk region was shelled. Later, Russia made statements about the "breach of the border by the Ukrainian Armed Forces". The Ukrainian military allegedly managed to occupy several Russian settlements and take control of them.
RBC-Ukraine has collected all the data on what is happening in the Kursk region as of the morning of August 7. Read more about why Sudzha is important for Russia and what facilities are there in the material by RBC-Ukraine.
It is also interesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted to the events in the Kursk region more than a day later. He convened a meeting at which he was promised to "liberate the Kursk region" from the attackers.
