G7 countries agree to respect Syria's territorial integrity
The leaders of the G7 countries discussed the situation in Syria during their meeting on December 13. They agreed to respect the country's territorial integrity after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, Sky News reports.
"All leaders agreed that Syria's territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty must be respected throughout the transition process and in future," the G7 statement said.
British Prime Minister Keir Sturmar noted that “the fall of Assad's brutal regime should be welcomed” but called for caution about “what comes next."
He also emphasized that the priority should be the security of the Syrian people, “ while supporting a political transition which leads to credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance on behalf of all Syrians.”
The fall of the Assad regime in Syria
Recently, rebels managed to cause the fall of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
In November, large-scale fighting broke out in Syria between the rebels of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, units of the Syrian National Army and Assad's army.
The main goal of the rebels was to overthrow the Assad regime and build a new Syria.
Eventually, Assad was forced to flee to Moscow, where he reportedly announced a voluntary transfer of power.
