G7 countries agree to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear energy
Energy ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have agreed to reduce their reliance on Russian supplies for their nuclear energy needs, citing a G7 communique following a meeting in Turin.
"We reaffirm G7 Leaders’ commitment to reduce reliance on civil nuclear-related goods from Russia including promoting a diversified fuel supply chain free from Russian influence and to assist countries seeking to diversify their supply," the document said.
Ministers also pledged to support nuclear fusion as a source of future energy.
Nuclear energy in G7 countries
The UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is preparing a plan to increase the workforce in the nuclear energy sector. This is driven by the increasing pace of nuclear submarine construction and the growing demand for nuclear energy, which is expected to create 40,000 new jobs by 2030.
Furthermore, in March 2023, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and US President Joseph Biden announced an agreement among the member states of the AUKUS alliance to provide the Australian Navy with nuclear-powered submarines.
