G7 accuses Kremlin of global disinformation and influence through RT propaganda
The G7 countries have accused the Kremlin of secret efforts to undermine elected governments around the world through disinformation campaigns, particularly via propaganda, according to a G7 statement.
The statement from the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) mentions the secret activities of the Russian state media RT and the Social Design Agency (SDA). It highlights that the Kremlin finances them for disinformation and influence campaigns.
"RT and SDA employ deceitful tactics, aiming to exploit social and political issues to polarize and weaken societies, to undermine and delegitimize elected governments, and to advance the Kremlin’s malign interests," the G7 stated.
These actions by Russian entities include diverting attention from war crimes in Ukraine and the humanitarian crises caused by the aggressive war.
"G7 RRM members will continue to shed light on these malign activities, which may include but are not limited to state-backed hostile cyber activities, psychological and information operations, and covert influence," the G7 added.
In 2025, the G7 presidency passed to Canada. As stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he hopes that G7 partners will help achieve a just peace this year.
Earlier, a group of European countries called on the G7 to lower the price cap on Russian oil in order to reduce Moscow's income for continuing the war in Ukraine without causing a shock to the market.
