Russia-Ukraine war: frontline update as of August 4

According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff, Ukrainian defense forces are persistently engaged in offensive operations along the Melitopol and Berdyansk directions, solidifying their positions at achieved frontlines and executing counter-battery measures. Over the past 24 hours, approximately 40 combat encounters were reported on the frontlines.
Enemy attacks
During the past day, the Russian Federation launched strikes utilizing Iranian-made Shahed drones against Ukraine. All 15 hostile drones were neutralized by our anti-air defense. Additionally, the enemy executed 1 missile strike, 57 aerial attacks, and conducted 29 artillery barrages from multiple rocket launch systems targeting our military positions and civilian settlements. Regrettably, civilian casualties were reported.
The likelihood of further missile and aerial attacks across Ukraine remains very high.
Frontline situations
On the Volyn and Polissya directions, the operational situation remains relatively stable.
On the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the enemy launched aerial attacks in the vicinity of Veterynarny, Kharkiv, and Vesele of the Kharkiv region. They also carried out mortar and artillery shelling on more than 40 settlements, including Karpovychi, Tymonovychi, and Leonivka in the Chernihiv region; Sopich, Kucherivka, Pavlivka, Myropillya, and Krasnopillya in the Sumy region; and Huriv Kozachok, Vysoka Yaruga, Vovchansk, Varvarivka, and Bolohivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Kupyansk direction, the adversary targeted the areas of Petropavlivka and Kyslivka with aerial strikes. Artillery and mortar fire affected Figolivka, Dvorichna, Kupyansk, and Kucherivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, artillery shelling by the enemy impacted settlements including Nevske, and Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, as well as Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, and Torske in the Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian defense forces contain the enemy southward and southeastward of Ivanivka. The adversary carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Chasove Yar, Ivanivka, and Druzhba. Over 15 settlements, including Vasiukivka, Hryhorivka, Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka, and Predtechyne in the Donetsk region, suffered from hostile artillery fire.
In the Avdiivka direction, the enemy targeted the area of Avdiivka with aerial strikes. Their unsuccessful offensive actions were observed northward and southeastward of Avdiivka, as well as southeastward of Pervomaiske. Artillery shelling affected Stepove, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
In the Maryinka direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the Russian offensive in the vicinity of the city of Maryinka. The enemy launched air strikes in the vicinity of Krasnohorivka and Maryinka. The invaders shelled the settlements of Krasnohorivka, Hostre, Maksymil’yanivka, Heorhiivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk region).
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy launched air strikes in the vicinity of Makarivka and the village of Rivnopil’. The adversary made unsuccessful attempts to regain the lost ground west of Staromaiors’ke and east of Urozhaine. Vremivka, Rivnopil’, and Novosilky (Donetsk region) came under artillery fire.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy launched air strikes in the vicinity of Uspenivka and Mala Tokmachka (Zaporizhzhia region). The adversary focuses its main efforts on preventing further advance of Ukrainian troops. More than 20x settlements, including Levadne, Hulyaipole, Novoandriivka, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, Stepnohirs’k (Zaporizhzhia region), and Nikopol’ (Dnipropetrovsk region), were shelled with artillery.
In the Kherson direction, the adversary launched an air strike in the vicinity of Odradokam’yanka. More than 20x settlements, including Shevchenkivka, Respublikanets’, Beryslav, Sadove, Kherson, Dniprovs’ke (Kherson region), Dmytrivka, and Ochakiv (Mykolaiv region), were shelled with enemy artillery.
At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct offensive operations on Melitopol’ and Berdyans’k axes, consolidating their positions, and conducting counter-battery fire.
Enemy losses
During the previous day, the defense aviation conducted 9 strikes against enemy personnel, equipment, and military vehicles, as well as 2 strikes against the adversary's anti-aircraft missile systems.
Missile troops and artillery units targeted 12 artillery units in firing positions, 1 radar station, 1 command post, 3 areas with enemy personnel concentration, 2 anti-aircraft defense systems, and 3 enemy ammunition depots during the past 24 hours.
