French MFA's head calls for additional 'life insurance' for Europe beyond NATO
Europe needs another structure to ensure the security of countries in the region in addition to the North Atlantic Alliance, states the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné, after a meeting with the heads of the Foreign Ministries of Poland and Germany.
"We need a second life insurance, not instead of NATO, not against it, but in addition to it," emphasizes Séjourné, commenting on the threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon the principle of collective security.
In turn, the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, notes that membership in the Alliance is "not a contract with a security company."
What Trump said
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said during a rally in South Carolina that he would not defend NATO allies who "refused to pay their bills."
He added that he would encourage Russia to attack such allies.
U.S. President Joe Biden, reacting to the statement, notes that Trump poses a threat to the national security of the United States.
