France24 reveals likely goal of Kursk region operation
The goal of the Ukrainian military operation in the Kursk region is to destabilize the situation in Russia. However, there are no plans for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to annex the region, states France24.
"We are on the offensive. The aim is to stretch the positions of the enemy, to inflict maximum losses and to destabilise the situation in Russia as they are unable to protect their own border," the security official said on condition of anonymity. The official added that the operation involves "a lot more." Ukrainian troops than the 1,000 reported by Russia, referring to "thousands."
The official stated that Ukrainian forces will adhere to international humanitarian law while on Russian territory and do not plan to annex the areas they currently control.
"There is no idea of annexation... We are operating in strict accordance with international law," the official said, contrasting this with alleged violations by Russian troops in occupied territories.
When asked if capturing the Kursk nuclear power plant near the border was a goal, the official responded:
"We will see how the Kursk operation will develop. We absolutely will not cause problems for nuclear security. This we can guarantee," he said.
Situation in the Kursk region
On August 6, Russia reported a "breach" of the border by Ukraine in the Kursk region. Fighting has been ongoing in the border areas of Kursk for six days.
From August 9 to 10, Russia imposed counter-terrorism measures in three border regions with Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War believes Russia declared the counter-terrorism operation to downplay the scale of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ incursion into Kursk.
As of August 11, analysts note that overall progress deeper into the Kursk region has slowed. Russian so-called "war correspondents" claimed that a garrison in the city of Sudzha was reportedly encircled.
