France has decided to deploy its instructors to Ukraine. There, they will assist in training Ukrainian defenders, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Syrskyi mentioned that he, together with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, held online negotiations with the Minister of Defense of France, Sebastien Le Cornu.

"I warmly welcome France's initiative to send instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian military personnel," the general emphasized.

According to Syrskyi, he has already signed documents allowing the first French instructors to visit Ukrainian training centers, and familiarize themselves with the infrastructure, and personnel.

The Chief of the General Staff expressed hope that France's determination would encourage other partners to join such an initiative.

He added that he thanked the French minister for military and economic assistance to Ukraine in defense against Russia.

Emmanuel Macron's statements

A few months ago, French President Emmanuel Macron became the first Western leader to entertain the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine.

Following this, the head of the French state outlined the conditions under which this initiative could be implemented. In particular, the deployment of troops could occur in the event of a new Russian advance towards Odesa or Kyiv.

On May 16, The New York Times reported that NATO allies are indeed discussing the deployment of troops to Ukraine. However, they intend to do this not for participation in combat operations but for training Ukrainian defenders.

According to journalists, Ukraine has asked Western allies to help train 150,000 soldiers.
