France takes responsibility for ensuring peace in Europe. This is a fundamental interest for the country, according to a post by French President Emmanuel Macron on Twitter (X).

The French head of state said he had a lengthy conversation with colleagues from the European Union, as well as Canada, Iceland, and Norway.

"France and its partners have a clear and united position. We want a strong and reliable peace in Ukraine. We support Ukraine and will fulfill all our commitments to ensure peace and security in Europe. This is a fundamental interest of France, and I am its guarantor," Macron assured.

He clarified that Europe shares the goal of US President Donald Trump — to end Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.

At the same time, he stated that Europe's efforts to achieve peace will continue based on the following principles:

  • Ukraine must always be involved, and its rights must be respected.
  • Peace must be lasting and accompanied by credible and reliable guarantees.
  • The security interests of Europeans must be taken into account.

Macron also emphasized the need to increase defense and security spending and to strengthen Europe’s capabilities. A decision on this matter will be made in the coming days and weeks.

Summit on Ukraine

France convened a second summit on Ukraine today, February 19, marking the second such meeting in three days.

The first summit took place in Paris on Monday, February 17. At that time, leaders did not make any decisions, as the meeting was consultative in nature.

According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the summit participants agreed on the need to develop a joint strategy for resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine.
