The French Ministry of Defense announced a revision of its military planning through 2030, focusing on expanding stocks of aerial bombs and drones, drawing lessons from the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to Politico.

France boosts weapon stockpiles

Paris plans to significantly expand its arsenal of precision-guided weapons in the coming years.

According to the updated military planning bill, France intends to increase its stock of AASM HAMMER bombs by 240% and kamikaze drones by 400%.

An additional €8.5 billion is allocated for the purchase of ammunition, missiles, and other munitions.

Lessons from war and a new strategy

The decision comes amid a reassessment of defense approaches in response to Russia's war against Ukraine.

The French Ministry of Defense notes that the conflict has demonstrated the rapid consumption of missiles, precision-guided munitions, and drones during intense combat operations.

The military is adapting to a "high-intensity warfare" scenario and is gradually shifting toward a "war economy" model, where the speed of weapons production is a key priority.

Focus on proven weapons

Particular attention is given to systems that have already proven effective on the battlefield.

Ukrainian forces have actively used AASM HAMMER guided bombs to strike enemy positions, while drones have become a central tool of modern warfare.

French defense officials emphasize that the widespread use of drones has been one of the main lessons of the conflict.

Budget growth and new developments

The plan also includes a phased increase in defense spending: €63.3 billion by 2027 and €76.3 billion by 2030.

France also plans to begin research on replacing Leclerc tanks, as a joint project with Germany is not expected until the 2040s.

Analysts note declining stocks of MICA missiles in France, used by Rafale fighters to intercept Iranian drones, which could affect the ability to respond to such threats, including in Ukraine.

Additionally, France and the Philippines have signed an agreement easing mutual military visits, amid Manila's search for partners due to Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.
