France announces shift in military aid to Ukraine

France confirms continued military support for Ukraine despite domestic political instability and the need to appoint a new prime minister, states French Minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad.
According to Haddad, French military assistance to Ukraine will continue despite the political upheaval in the country, which includes the appointment of the fifth prime minister in less than two years.
Support for Ukraine is a cross-party issue
Haddad, who has experienced two changes of prime minister over the past year, emphasized that his visit to Ukraine on Thursday will proceed regardless of who takes office as head of government. The minister noted that support for Ukraine is a cross-party issue, uniting socialists, Republicans, and centrists, and is fundamentally in France’s national interest.
Defense budget and new deliveries
The minister noted that France’s defense budget has been maintained and its increases safeguarded in recent years. He confirmed that France will continue to expand military support for Ukraine, and that his visit to Kyiv will send an important signal. President Emmanuel Macron has already pledged an additional €2 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year.
Political scene and succession
Haddad refrained from commenting on possible candidates for the new prime minister after François Bayrou failed to secure a confidence vote on budget deficit issues. According to government sources, Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu is being considered as a potential successor, indicating an effort to ensure continuity in state policy.
France and Germany have proposed that the EU include the Russian oil company Lukoil in the 19th sanctions package against Russia. In a joint statement, the countries emphasized that revenues from oil and gas exports are a key source of funding for Moscow’s military operations against Ukraine.
The French Ministry of Defense has signed an agreement with the consortium of MBDA, Safran Electronics & Defense, Thales, and CILAS to develop a prototype of a high-powered laser weapon designed to neutralize drones.
