Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink runs for Congress to oppose Trump

"I've dedicated my life to protecting democracy & fighting for freedom. It's why we stood up to Putin and why I spoke out against Trump. My next mission: fighting for what's right here at home," Brink said.

She added that she would be running in Michigan's 7th District because "it's time to put Michigan families first and push back."

Michigan's 7th District is considered a competitive seat, with a slight Republican advantage.

The next election for the district's congressional representative will take place in November 2026.

Brink's resignation

It was reported in early April that US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink had submitted her resignation. At the time, the reasons for her decision were not publicly disclosed.

However, media outlets later reported that Brink stepped down due to growing policy disagreements with the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Brink later clarified the reason for her resignation, stating that she could no longer in good conscience implement the policies of President Trump — particularly in light of his pressure on Ukraine rather than on Russia.

In early April, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih. A ballistic missile carrying a cluster warhead detonated in the air near a children's playground. The attack killed nine children, and more were injured.

Following the tragedy, Ambassador Brink reacted on social media platform X, but did not initially mention Russia's responsibility for the strike. She wrote that the attack was another reminder of "why the war must end."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said he was deeply disappointed by Brink's response to the attack, calling it weak.

The following day, Brink issued another statement, this time clarifying that Russia was indeed responsible for the strike on Kryvyi Rih.
