Forget Photoshop: Google teaches Gemini to edit your photos

The Google Gemini chatbot app now allows users to edit both AI-generated images and photos uploaded from their phone or computer, reports Lifehacker.
Details of update
This feature has been available for some time in Google AI Studio, but now Google has begun gradually rolling it out to all Gemini users, with support for 45 languages. The company states that conversational prompts can be used to edit both AI-generated images and photos uploaded from a smartphone or computer.
What you can do with image editing in Gemini
The main advantage of this feature is simplified photo editing. A user can chat with the Gemini bot to generate an image or upload their photo into the chat and ask the AI to edit it. This is similar to the Reimagine feature in Google Pixel, which allows fictional elements to be added to real images.
With Gemini’s tools, you can:
- Replace individual objects in a photo
- Change the background
- Add completely new elements from scratch
In the Google blog, one example given is uploading a photo and asking the AI to change your hair color to see how you’d look after dyeing it.
Moreover, the AI remembers previous requests, so you can apply edits to an image in stages, across multiple messages. It’s also claimed that this feature allows you to create entire stories and visual illustrations for them.

Ethical concerns and limitations
Such features raise ethical concerns — primarily due to the risk of generating fake images that could harm individuals or companies. To prevent this, Google will apply invisible watermarks to all AI-generated images and is also experimenting with visible watermarks to make such images easier to identify.
Since the feature is only beginning to roll out, it may not be immediately available to all users. In addition, this capability will not be available for Google Workspace or education accounts.
