Ukraine regulates legal status of foreigners fighting against Russia

The law on the legal status of foreigners fighting for Ukraine has entered into force in Ukraine, according to MP Oleksii Honcharenko.
Today, the Ukrainian Government adopted a relevant resolution to make the law work.
This law will allow foreigners and stateless persons who defend Ukraine to obtain temporary residence permits or immigrate. This will be possible even if their documents are overdue.
Family members of such military personnel will also be entitled to temporary residence in Ukraine.

On August 20 this year, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill on changes to the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons participating in the defense of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Draft Law No. 9585 provides for:
- the possibility of obtaining immigration permits or Ukrainian citizenship based on expired passports and temporary residence permits for foreigners who defend Ukraine as part of the territorial defense or volunteer groups
- family members of contract servicemen in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, National Guard, and State Special Transport Service will be entitled to temporary residence
- citizens of Russia and Belarus who acquired Ukrainian citizenship from February 24, 2020, must submit a document on the termination of foreign citizenship within a year after the end of martial law
- persons who acquired citizenship during the war may take exams on the Constitution, history, and language within two years after the lifting of martial law.
