The US military has destroyed an Iranian vessel in international waters, using a torpedo to carry out the strike, states Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, according to The Guardian.
The minister confirmed that a US submarine sank an Iranian warship with a torpedo, saying the vessel thought it was "safe in international waters."
"The first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II. Like in that war... we are fighting to win," Pete Hegseth emphasized.
Rumors about the strike on the Iranian vessel
Earlier today, March 4, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that a large-scale rescue operation had been launched off the coast near the city of Galle after a distress signal was received from the Iranian military frigate IRIS Dena.
According to the ministry, about 180 people were on board. At the same time, Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry confirmed that 32 crew members had been rescued.
Reuters, citing anonymous sources in Sri Lanka’s defense agencies, reported that the vessel had been attacked by a submarine, leaving 101 people missing and 78 injured.
However, official representatives of the Sri Lankan Navy denied those reports, stating that no other ships or aircraft had been detected in the area and calling the figures on the missing "unreliable."
Notably, on March 3, US President Donald Trump claimed that all of Iran’s naval forces had been destroyed.
