Apple is only preparing to enter the foldable iPhone market, but Samsung isn’t ready to give up its lead. The South Korean tech giant is reportedly working on a new foldable smartphone with a different form factor, according to Mashable.

New foldable smartphone format from Samsung

Insiders report that Samsung is developing a device with a wider body than the current Galaxy Fold 7 flagship. The new model may be called the Samsung Wide Fold.

According to a source familiar with the company’s plans, the device will feature a 7.6-inch internal display with a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded. The external screen is said to measure 5.4 inches diagonally.

For comparison, the Galaxy Fold 7 has an 8-inch internal display, so the change in size will be minimal. The key difference will be the aspect ratio. The 4:3 format is expected to make the device feel more like a classic tablet, while the Galaxy Fold 7 uses a nearly square 3:3.3 ratio.

It’s worth noting that Samsung’s lineup already includes foldable phones in different formats: the Galaxy Flip 7 with vertical folding and the Galaxy TriFold with a triple hinge.

The TriFold, in particular, is already close to a 4:3 format (2160×1584 pixels). Adding another model might seem redundant, but Samsung appears ready to experiment and test different form factors.

Connection to Apple's plans and the iPhone Fold

The reason for the new foldable device may be directly linked to Apple’s plans. Rumor has it that the iPhone Fold will also feature a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded, making it resemble a compact tablet.

If confirmed, Samsung could try to get ahead by introducing an alternative before the first foldable iPhone hits the market.

Both devices, the Samsung Wide Fold and the iPhone Fold, are expected to debut in 2026. If predictions hold, next year could be a turning point for the foldable smartphone market.
