Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called a foreign attack one of the possible causes of the fire at the oil refinery in Százhalombatta last week.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, last night he listened to a report from the interior minister regarding the incident at the refinery in Százhalombatta.

“The investigation is in full swing. We still don’t know whether it was an accident, a malfunction, or a foreign attack,” Orbán said.

He added that the refinery in Százhalombatta is one of Hungary’s five most important strategic industrial enterprises.

“The Polish foreign minister advised the Ukrainians to blow up the Barátság (Druzhba) pipeline. Let’s hope that’s not the case. Gasoline prices have already risen sharply,” Orbán wrote.

Fire at Hungary's refinery

During the night of October 21, a massive fire broke out at the country’s largest refinery operated by MOL.

The source of the fire was a crude oil distillation unit. According to eyewitnesses, flames and thick smoke were visible from several kilometers away.

The MOL refinery is Hungary’s main oil processing plant and operates, among other things, on Russian oil.

The incident prompted the convening of a security committee in Hungary. The Hungarian prime minister held consultations with MOL’s management and the interior minister regarding the fire.

In August, Hungary was left without Russian oil several times due to a series of strikes on the Druzhba pipeline carried out by Ukrainian drone units. Later, oil supplies were restored.
