Two incidents occurred at oil refineries in Europe on the same day — a fire and explosions at the MOL refinery in Hungary, and an explosion at the Petrotel Lukoil refinery in Romania, according to Magyar Nemzet and Digi24.

Fire at the MOL refinery

According to Magyar Nemzet, a fire broke out at the large MOL oil refinery in Százhalombatta, Hungary. The incident occurred on the evening of October 20.

The MOL refinery is the country's main oil refinery and operates, among other sources, on Russian crude oil. Videos of the fire filmed by eyewitnesses have circulated online.

The incident prompted the convening of Hungary’s security committee. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held consultations with MOL leadership and the Minister of the Interior regarding the fire.

The scale of the damage from the fire is still unknown. Work to eliminate the consequences of the blaze is ongoing.

Explosion at the Petrotel Lukoil refinery in Romania

An explosion occurred at the Petrotel Lukoil oil refinery in Romania, which is also linked to Russia. The incident happened during maintenance work carried out by refinery employees and contractors.

According to Romanian media citing the company’s Facebook page, the explosion occurred in the sewage system, causing the manhole cover to be blown off.

As a result, a contractor employee was injured. He was urgently taken to the Prahova County Emergency Hospital, conscious and in stable condition, for examination and medical care.

It was reported on October 20 that an explosion occurred at a Romanian refinery, and information about the injured worker was already available at that time.

As is known, Ukraine periodically targets oil refineries in Russia to hit the Kremlin’s war machine, as these facilities feed the enemy’s budget.

For example, RBC-Ukraine recently wrote about a drone attack on an oil refinery in Ufa, Russia — explosions were heard, and the area was covered in smoke.
