Finnish President says significant steps taken toward Ukraine-Russia ceasefire

Finnish President Alexander Stubb held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump to discuss a potential ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, Yle reports.
Stubb said that on May 8, together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, he called both Zelenskyy and Trump.
Today, the Finnish President emphasized that he views the talks positively.
"We had a good conversation. We discussed a ceasefire and made significant progress. The United States is committed to this process. This is important for Ukraine and the world," he noted.
He added that the call with Trump lasted 15-20 minutes and covered various aspects of the truce, including Trump's conversation with Zelenskyy yesterday. According to Stubb, the US is actively involved in the peace process.
"The conversation was productive, and Trump expressed his commitment to achieving peace in Ukraine," said Støre.
The Norwegian Prime Minister stressed that there is a shared understanding that an unconditional ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia must be the first step.
Stubb also clarified that following their talks with Trump, he published a post on Truth Social calling for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
Trump-Zelenskyy talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on May 8. Among other issues, they discussed the Ukrainian Parliament’s ratification of the minerals deal.
Following the talks, Zelenskyy stated he was ready for an immediate 30-day ceasefire with Russia.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to refuse the ceasefire, citing various excuses. Recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that Ukraine might use a ceasefire to boost its military capabilities.
