Finnish President Alexander Stubb believes that without the support of the United States, Ukraine's accession to NATO is unlikely in the short term, CNBC reports.

"It is realistic to say that if one of the key member states of the alliance, in other words, the United States, is against Ukraine's membership in NATO at this particular moment, that it won't happen in short term or, however you define medium term," he said.

At the same time, the Finnish leader expressed his belief that in the long run, Ukraine should get its own way into the Alliance.

Ukraine's accession to NATO

During the full-scale war, Ukraine took an important step towards NATO membership by applying for accelerated membership in the fall of 2022.

NATO emphasizes that Ukraine has a membership perspective, but joining the Alliance during wartime is currently excluded. And US President Donald Trump has rejected the possibility of Ukraine's membership in the Alliance altogether.

At the same time, Pentagon Chief Pete Haggett called Ukraine's membership in NATO unrealistic as a possible security guarantee to end the war.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on the prospects of Ukraine's accession to NATO.
