Finland suggests EU may need to strengthen support for Ukraine after US election
The European Union may need to increase support for Ukraine if a difficult period follows the US presidential election. Now is not the time for war fatigue, stated Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkinen in an interview with Yle.
"We currently have strong confidence in the Ukraine support group, which includes the United States, that the US will continue its support," the Minister said.
However, he noted that the US election could impact Ukraine’s support. If that happens, Europe will need to provide Ukraine with more financial aid than it does now.
"If things get tough, Europe must take responsibility for it. This means that more money should be found in the wallets of European taxpayers to support Ukraine," Häkkinen added.
He emphasized that now is not the time for war fatigue or discussions of peace on Russia’s terms. Peace should be achieved on Ukraine's terms.
US elections
On November 5, the United States will hold its presidential election, with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump as the main candidates. There is no clear favorite.
As Oleksandr Kraiev from the Foreign Policy Council Ukrainian Prism told RBC-Ukraine, Trump is likely to push Ukraine toward negotiations.
