Finnish President Alexander Stubb hopes that US President Donald Trump will maintain his focus on Russia’s war against Ukraine and expects him not to abandon his promise to end it, Stubb said in an interview with Politico.

Responding to a question about whether he is concerned that Trump could change his position, Stubb said he hopes that will not happen.

“He’s very preoccupied with Iran right now. For understandable reasons, the war in Iran is taking a lot of oxygen out of what’s going on in Ukraine. In my mind, it seems like the peace talks are now on hold,” Stubb said.

According to him, after three rounds of talks involving representatives from Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow, no new meetings are planned in the near future.

“This could be because of Iran, or it could be because they have reached an end of the road,” the Finnish president added.

Trump’s statements on the war in Ukraine

In early March, Donald Trump once again said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is allegedly hindering a peace agreement. He claims Ukraine is rapidly losing leverage for negotiations, while the Kremlin is supposedly ready for dialogue.

On March 15, the US president said he was surprised that Zelenskyy allegedly does not want to reach a peace deal.

Yesterday, Trump described the fighting in Ukraine as a horrific meat grinder and called for an end to the mass loss of life.
