'Fico may go to Davos but end up somewhere in Sochi': Zelenskyy on Slovak PM's meeting request
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sarcastically commented on the new proposal from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who wants to meet on January 21 at the Davos forum, Bloomberg informs.
In particular, in a comment to the media outlet, Zelenskyy stated that he cannot plan anything because Fico may go "to Davos but end up somewhere in Sochi."
"We don’t know who buys his tickets, as he constantly misses his destinations," the president added.
Bloomberg reports on today's visit of Slovak opposition leader Michal Šimečka to Kyiv. He supports Ukraine's EU membership and stated that it is crucial for Slovakia.
Relations between the countries have recently deteriorated due to Robert Fico's criticism of Zelenskyy for halting the transit of Russian gas. Šimečka said he discussed this issue with the President of Ukraine, who called the topic sensitive and requested important signals from Slovakia.
The opposition leader's visit took place against the backdrop of poll results showing his party, Progressive Slovakia, with 23% support, surpassing Fico's party (20%).
Today Fico complained to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Ukraine would halt the transit of Russian gas starting January 1, 2025. According to him, he has been proposing a meeting with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, for several days and even suggested a possible date — January 21.
Previously, it was reported that the President of Ukraine might attend the forum; however, his trip has not been officially announced.
This week, Fico invited him to the Slovak-Ukrainian border and suggested using the Kyiv-Košice train. In response, Zelenskyy invited him to visit Kyiv on January 17. The Slovak Prime Minister refused.
