Fever in a child with pharmacies closed. Doctor shares guidance
The fever in a child always worries parents, but it is important to understand that temperature is a protective reaction of the body, its immune response. How to help a child if you don't have a fever reducer and the pharmacy is closed, explains pediatrician Darina Vlasenko.
What parents need to know
If you find yourself in such a situation, stay calm: it's important to know that over-the-counter fever reducers are intended purely for the child's comfort. They do not cure the disease or reduce its severity or duration.
Only 2 drugs are allowed for use in children:
- Acetaminophen (paracetamol)
- Ibuprofen
In this situation, do not give the child other medications such as analgin, nimesulide, or aspirin. This can be dangerous.
Combination drugs (those with more than one ingredient): it's better not to give children under 6 years old drugs with more than one component.
Does the child need a fever reducer?
Fever is a sign that the immune system of the body is doing its job to fight infection.
In addition, besides fever-reducing medications, there are a few things you can do to help your child feel more comfortable:
-
Encourage children to drink plenty of fluids.
-
Try to give small sips of water, oral rehydration solution, or even ice cream.
-
Dress the child in comfortable and breathable clothing and provide a blanket if they are shivering.
-
A warm bath can be pleasant, but avoid ice baths and cold water, as it will make your child shiver and actually create more heat.
-
If the child is old enough, you can also use chewable tablets or soluble powders.
Just read the label and pay attention to the dosage instructions based on the weight and age of your child.
When to seek help
Most viral illnesses causing fever in children pass within a week.
Focus on how your child looks and behaves when they are sick: if they have a fever but are playful, they probably feel well at home.
But if the child is under 2 years old, the temperature is above 38 degrees, and it does not decrease within a day, it is a reason to see a doctor.
