Explosion rocks Qatar gas facility, dozens injured and missing

A powerful explosion occurred at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant in Qatar. More than 50 people have already been injured, while another 18 are considered missing, reports Reuters.
What happened
The incident occurred on June 21 during the start-up of operations in the industrial city of Ras Laffan.
According to QatarEnergy, the explosion caused a fire at the Barzan gas distribution facility. Emergency response units were deployed to deal with the aftermath. The fire has already been brought under control.
How many people were affected
According to Qatar's Ministry of Interior, 54 people were injured in the explosion.
Rescue services continue searching for 18 people who are currently considered missing.
What authorities say
Qatar's Interior Ministry said the incident was caused by a technical accident.
The ministry also stressed that no gas leak or release of other substances that could pose a threat to public safety had been detected.
At the same time, QatarEnergy has not yet reported whether the facility sustained damage or how the incident affected its operations.
What is known about the facility
The Barzan gas complex supplies natural gas to Qatar's domestic market.
The facility has a capacity of about 40 million cubic meters of gas per day. It provides fuel for the country's industrial and energy sectors.
In March 2026, an Iranian missile had already struck the facility. At the time, the terminal suffered significant damage.
Following the attack, Qatar completely halted production at the facility and expelled Iranian diplomats from the country.
Qatar and Iran are jointly developing the world's largest offshore natural gas field in the Persian Gulf.
Revenue from the extraction of these resources has been the foundation of Qatar's economic growth and the strengthening of its role on the international stage.
