Explosion rocks Hungarian oil giant’s refinery, massive fire breaks out

Today, May 22, an explosion occurred at a plant belonging to MOL, Hungary’s largest oil and gas company. One person was killed, and several others were seriously injured, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
“An explosion occurred at the MOL plant in Tiszaújváros. One person was killed, and several others were seriously injured,” the statement said.
Energy Minister István Kapitány and MOL CEO Zsolt Hernádi are already on their way to the scene.
According to local media reports, the explosion occurred during the restart of the plant. Firefighters quickly contained the fire; work is currently underway at the scene of the incident. An investigation into the causes of the accident is underway.

According to the emergency response service, the incident poses no threat to the public.
A spokesperson for the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County disaster response team reported that firefighters are continuing to extinguish the blaze, and a mobile laboratory has been dispatched to the site to monitor the situation.
The Hungarian company MOL is connected to Ukraine primarily through the transit of oil via the Druzhba pipeline.
