Execution of 109 Ukrainian POWs confirmed over year - Ukraine's Ombudsman
In 2024 alone, it was possible to officially confirm the executions of 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war by the Russian military. There has been no effective response from the international community to these war crimes, states the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, during a national telethon broadcast.
"We have been able to officially document more violations of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war, including cynical point-blank executions, unfortunately. In 2024 alone, it was officially confirmed that Russians executed 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war. For comparison, in previous years, a total of 177 such cases were recorded, so you can see that the number in 2024 is significantly higher," said Lubinets.
According to him, intelligence and law enforcement agencies have reported that Russian forces frequently violate the rights of prisoners of war.
"Unfortunately, I could not publicly present these examples of cynical violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. But whenever we managed to document them, we did so," the ombudsman added.
At the same time, he noted that there has been no effective response from the international community to these war crimes.
