Ex-president of Peru sent to prison among ordinary criminals

Former Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra has been transferred to a general prison, where he will serve five months of pre-trial detention on corruption charges, according to Bloomberg.
Previously, Vizcarra was held in a presidential prison designated for high-ranking officials. He is now among regular inmates in Ancón, north of Lima, highlighting the seriousness of the charges and marking a new phase in his legal case.
The transfer was carried out as part of the five-month pre-trial detention for corruption allegations, which Vizcarra denies.
Peru’s prison administration (INPE) stated that Vizcarra does not meet the requirements to be held in the presidential prison, without providing further details.
In response, Martín Vizcarra wrote on X on Saturday: “I will resist from wherever they send me, but they will not break me, they will not break me. I will continue fighting for the restoration of democracy and the unity of Peruvians against the mafia pact that governs us.”
Peruvian authorities have not yet announced a possible date for the conclusion of the investigation or subsequent court actions.
This case has drawn public and international attention, as it is one of the few instances in which a former national leader has been placed in a general prison on corruption charges.
Meanwhile, Vizcarra’s lawyers state that the former president continues to cooperate with the investigation and intends to prove his innocence in court.
Martín Vizcarra became president in 2018 and was removed from office in 2020, although he remains a relatively popular figure who attempted to run for the presidency the following year. However, Congress stripped him of his political rights.
