European Commission President discusses Ukraine with Trump
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump on November 7, during which they discussed, among other topics, Ukraine, stated von der Leyen shared at an informal European Union summit in Budapest.
"I had opportunity yesterday afternoon to congratulate Donald Trump on the phone. We discussed, among others, the topic of Ukraine, and defense, trade and energy. It was a brief discussion about these topics and of course, I'm looking forward to develop these topics together," European Commission President said.
She emphasized the importance for the EU to establish a strong relationship with the new US administration from the start.
US election
The US presidential election took place on Tuesday, November 5. The candidates were Kamala Harris from the Democratic Party and Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
Trump won the election, securing more than 270 electoral votes.
On the morning of November 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his "impressive victory." He noted his appreciation for the Republican commitment to the “peace through strength” approach and expressed hope that this principle could help bring peace to Ukraine.
