Europe is preparing for a possible breakdown in transatlantic relations if Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the US election. Various plans are currently being developed, reports The Washington Post.

WP gathered information from 15 anonymous politicians and experts from five European countries and learned that the closest US allies in Europe are preparing for a possible break in transatlantic relations with the United States.

According to them, having survived one Trump presidency, European politicians say they are better prepared for the second. They are developing various contingency plans for security and trade.

However, in a sense, they recognize that Europe is now less equipped to deal with Trump than it was before.

The newspaper noted that interviews with interlocutors indicate that regardless of who wins, the region is facing a future reality check on its dependence on the United States.

“Regardless of who wins the US election, the focus of US attention in the future will increasingly be on the Indo-Pacific. Europeans will have to do even more for their security,” German Defense Ministry spokesperson Michael Stempfle said in an interview.

US presidential elections

The US presidential election will take place on November 5. The race is between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.

In several states, the National Guard has already been put on alert due to possible unrest during the election. The day before, ballot boxes were set on fire in these states, and hundreds of ballots were burned.

Moreover, today more than 75 million Americans voted early in the US presidential election.
