The European Union is providing Ukraine with a new tranche worth €80 million. These are revenues from frozen Russian assets, the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said this at a press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

According to Kallas, during today’s talks, the focus was on two points:

  • How to strengthen and support Ukraine;
  • How to increase pressure on Russia.

She added that in order to end the war, it is necessary to confront Russia rather than reward it. In particular, sanctions must be strengthened, not weakened. Brussels has already prepared the 20th sanctions package, which will allow for further tightening the noose around Russia’s shadow fleet.

The EU foreign policy chief emphasized that she was pleased to announce that the EU was providing Ukraine with an additional €80 million generated from the revenues of frozen Russian assets.

Kallas also added that Ukraine’s energy needs were discussed today. The EU continues to mobilize international support for the supply of generators and repair equipment so that Ukraine is better protected next winter.

Initially, the text stated that the tranche amounted to €18 billion, but the information was later corrected. According to the updated data, the EU is providing Ukraine with €80 million.

EU financial assistance to Ukraine

Over the four years of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the European Union has not yet decided to confiscate all frozen assets in favor of Ukraine.

Instead, Brussels opted to provide Ukraine with the revenues generated from frozen Russian assets.

Recently, EU countries considered providing Ukraine with a reparations loan backed by Russian assets. However, this measure also failed to gain sufficient support within the bloc.
