The European Union plans to adopt a 20th package of sanctions against Russia by February 24, 2026, the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Euractiv reports.
As the agency notes, citing an unnamed diplomat, the EU may present a new package of restrictive measures precisely on the anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
"A diplomat said the EU’s 20th sanctions package was expected by 24 February, the fourth anniversary of the war," Euractiv writes.
According to the agency, Finland and Sweden are the initiators of the sanctions tightening.
They propose to introduce new restrictions on the export of luxury goods to Russia, the servicing of oil tankers, and to reduce quotas on the import of Russian fertilizers.
EU sanctions against Russia
Welt previously reported that European Union ambassadors plan to adopt a 20th package of sanctions against Russia before the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The new restrictions will include a travel ban and asset freeze for individuals and organizations involved in the abduction of children and ideological re-education.
Sanctions are also expected in the energy and banking sectors, and Brussels is considering a ban on Russian uranium imports, which will affect Russia's Federal Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom.
Also, according to media reports, the 20th package of EU sanctions will target Russia's nuclear, oil, and steel industries.
In October, the EU officially approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions were aimed at reducing the Kremlin's revenues and preventing the circumvention of sanctions through third countries, as well as the shadow fleet.
European Union ambassadors continue to discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia. As part of its preparation, more than 40 tankers from the shadow fleet have already been added to the blacklist.
