Ambassadors of the European Union plan to adopt a 20th package of sanctions against Russia by the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Welt reports.

According to the publication, the sanctions are intended to further punish Moscow for its aggressive war against Ukraine and to weaken the Russian economy further.

Travel restrictions and asset freezes within the European Union are planned for additional individuals and organizations, with particular attention to those responsible for the deportation and ideological re-education of children.

According to European diplomats, additional sanctions in the energy and banking sectors are also envisaged. In addition, plans are in place to close loopholes used to circumvent existing sanctions.

In Brussels, the possibility of banning imports of Russian uranium is under consideration, effectively imposing sanctions on Russia's Federal Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom.

As the publication notes, such restrictions have long been demanded by numerous EU member states. However, resistance remains from countries such as France and Belgium.

According to diplomatic sources, these countries could purchase the uranium needed to operate their nuclear power plants from South Africa, Australia, or Canada, albeit at higher prices.

EU sanctions against Russia

In October, the EU officially approved its 19th sanctions package against Russia. The restrictions were aimed at reducing Kremlin revenues, preventing sanctions circumvention through third countries, and targeting the so-called shadow fleet.

Earlier, media reports said EU ambassadors were continuing to discuss a new sanctions package against Russia. As part of its preparation, more than 40 shadow fleet tankers have already been added to the blacklist.

According to media reports, the EU's 20th sanctions package will also target Russia's nuclear sector, oil, and steel industries.
